Isaiah 50:10-11

There are times in every believer’s life when it seems as if the light of God’s presence is extinguished. In such times, we grope in doubt and dismay. We lack confidence, and our old approach to life doesn’t seem to be working. We seem terribly lost and alone. Even the greatest of biblical saints have experienced this. The words of this text give us counsel for such times as they cause us to reflect on the reality of darkness and what should be our response in such times.

I. THE REALITY OF DARKNESS

The prophet’s question, “Who walks in darkness and has no light” (10b) invites each of us to respond at times, “I do.” We must recognize several important truths in this matter. First, darkness is not unusual in the life of a Christian. The greatest of saints—even Jesus Himself—have experienced times when God seems absent, His voice silenced. We may feel terribly alone in such times, but we’re not alone in going through the experience. Second, darkness is not unfruitful. There is a purpose in the darkness we do not yet comprehend. Some of life’s deepest truths can only be learned in the chasm of darkness. Our spiritual sight can be sharpened by such times, for we are too easily dazzled by the brightness and allurements of the world. Times of darkness remove those things and bring renewed clarity of spiritual vision. Third, darkness is not unending. You are going to come through this time, however dark it may now seem. “Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning” (Ps. 30:2).

II. THE RESPONSE IN DARKNESS

The prophet reminds us of things we should and should not do in such times. First, look to the Lord. Don’t look for guidance from mere earthly beacons. Through eyes of faith we can see through the darkness. We don’t need explanations, nor has God promised any. We don’t live on explanations; we live on promises. Second, lean on the Lord (10c). Earthly props are sometimes removed so we learn to lean on Him. We learn to trust in His nature, His wisdom, His power. He will always be sufficient for you, and you will find in Him a priceless treasure of darkness. Third, leave it with the Lord (11). Avoid the temptation to take charge of your life, to light your own fire. You’ll only make things worse for yourself. Let go, and let God have His way.
